Tuition

Tuition depends on two things: how many hours a day, and how many weeks. Group classes cost less per hour than private ones, and every school gets cheaper per week the longer you book.

Accommodation

This is the line you actually control.

  • Host family. Usually includes meals. It is also the single best value in language terms, because you get several more hours a day of unavoidable Spanish.
  • Shared apartment. More independence, lower cost than a private flat, and you cook for yourself.
  • Private apartment. Most comfortable, most expensive, least Spanish.

Students who want the language to move fastest take the host family. Students who want their own space take the apartment and add an afternoon activity to compensate.

Food

Ecuador is genuinely inexpensive to eat in. An almuerzo at a neighbourhood restaurant, a set lunch of soup, a main and a juice, costs a few dollars. Cooking at home costs less again. If you are with a host family this mostly disappears from your budget.

Getting there and getting around

Flights are usually the biggest single cost of the whole trip, and the one to book earliest. Once you are here, city buses cost cents and taxis across town cost a few dollars.

Ecuador uses the US dollar, which removes an entire category of planning: no exchange rate to watch, no conversion fees, no currency risk between booking and arriving.

The cost people forget

Booking through an agency.

Language travel platforms list schools and take a commission on every booking, commonly 20 to 30 percent. That money does not buy you a better course. It is the same school, the same teacher and the same classroom, listed at a higher price.

Writing to the school directly is the single easiest way to lower your total.

Putting it together

For a month, budget in this order: flights first, then accommodation, then tuition, then a small allowance for food and weekends. If the total is tight, adjust the accommodation before you adjust the weeks. Fewer weeks costs you the thing you came for.
